As a licensed, board certified therapeutic optometrist and glaucoma specialist Dr. Jelita Green-Dathorne provides comprehensive eye health examinations, as well as diagnosis and treatment of disorders that affect the eye and visual system. In addition to training in eye diseases and disorders, Dr. Green is also trained in anatomy, biochemistry, physiology and pharmacology and is proficient in diagnosing a range of diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetes, hypertension and various neurological diseases. She also co-manages eye surgery and thoroughly enjoys complex contact lens fittings. Dr. Green is a proud native of the great state of Mississippi. She attended The University of Southern Mississippi for her undergraduate studies, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Chemistry and graduated with Honors. Shortly after, she worked as a clinical technician assisting several optometrists. Dr. Green later earned a Master of Science degree in Biology from Texas Southern University, where she graduated with Highest Honors. While in graduate school, she worked as a teacher and taught math and science to 1st grade and 6th grade students on the autism spectrum. She then went on to earn her Doctorate from the University of Houston College of Optometry in 2007. Dr. Green works hard to stay current on the latest advances in eye health and vision care and regularly attends continuing education seminars and advanced training courses. It is because of Dr. Green's dedication to continuing education that her patients receive the most modern and progressive vision care available. As a former teacher, she also prides herself on educating her patients about all aspects of their eye health. Devoted to serving her community, Dr. Green often provides volunteer services to the See to Succeed and OneSight programs, which provide free eye exams and free eyeglasses to underprivileged children in the Houston area. She also provides vision screenings for children in local schools and for underserved citizens in the community. Dr. Green is very passionate about her business. She is the 2014 Business Plan Pitch Competition winner from Capital One Bank's Getting Down to Business Program and has recently achieved certification for Gulf Coast Vision Center by the Women's Business Enterprise National Council. She is a member of the American Optometric Association and the Texas Optometric Association. She has had her practice recognized by the City of Houston as well as City Council for her service to the community and even earned a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition for excellence in business. Despite her busy schedule, Dr. Green cherishes her role as a wife and a mother of 5 the most. She enjoys travel, live music, and is an amateur photographer. She is an active member of Windsor Village United Methodist Church and is also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
